Wells Branch Wild Conservancy
– Invasive Plants
Invasive plants aren’t native to the areas they live in, and they can disrupt local ecosystems by crowding out native plants. Our local wildlife depends on native plants, so it’s important we protect them! To learn more about invasive plants, join Cliff Tyllick for a presentation at the Wells Branch Recreation Center (3000 Shoreline Drive) on Saturday, February 8, at 9 a.m. I hope to see you there!
What’s Escaping Your Landscape? by Cliff Tyllick
Everyone in Wells Branch can pitch in to help control invasive species! Here are some simple ways you can get involved:
- Learn about invasive plants, especially the ones found in our area.
- If you own a home, take a look at your landscape:
- Do you have plants that birds might spread to other areas? If so, consider replacing them with native options.
- Watch for common invasive species like Bradford pear, Chinese pistache, Chinese privet, and Nandina. Even though they’re invasive, people still plant them.
- Keep an eye out for chinaberry, Chinese tallow, and glossy privet. These have spread throughout Central Texas but aren’t being intentionally planted anymore. If you spot one in your yard, it was probably planted by a bird!
- Create a more native landscape: Native plants are great for birds, butterflies, and pollinators, and they also support healthy soil and insects. It’s a win-win!
- Help document nature in our greenbelts: You can use the iNaturalist app to share your observations, and professionals working to manage invasive species will see your contributions.
- Join us for a hands-on opportunity to remove invasive plants! Volunteer with Wells Branch Wild Conservancy during Keep Wells Branch Beautiful Day on Saturday, March 1.
