Detention Pond Improvement Project
The District is beginning a significant maintenance project to enhance the capacity of some of our stormwater detention ponds. These structures play a crucial role in the management of stormwater by slowing and filtering water that falls during a rainfall event.
The project will improve the capacity and integrity of the detention ponds so they can handle larger flows brought on by increasing rainfall experienced during extreme rainfall events. The Atlas 14 study on precipitation changes predicts Central Texas will experience higher levels of rainfall than what the detention ponds were originally designed to accommodate. Wells Branch MUD has undertaken this initiative to address the changing rainfall patterns and enhance the capacity and efficiency of these essential stormwater management components.
Detention ponds area crucial component of the stormwater collection system and serve multiple vital purposes. Firstly, they act as a means to slow down the flow of stormwater, preventing rapid runoff that can lead to flooding during heavy rainfall. Secondly, they provide a simple cleaning and filtration process. Lastly, these ponds contribute to the overall aesthetics of our neighborhood, adding green spaces and recreational opportunities for residents.
The first phase of the project will begin at the KF Soccer Field Detention Pond, followed by the Big Basin Detention Pond near Wells Port Drive, and then on to the large pond located on Tandem Boulevard.
During these projects, certain sections of the Wells Branch trail systems will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of trail users and accommodate the construction. Contractors will set up closure and detour signs to guide residents around the affected areas, so please follow these signs accordingly. A staging area will also be established within each pond to store equipment and materials during construction. All best management construction practices will be followed to prevent debris and sediment from entering the stormwater system.
When the construction begins at the Big Basin Pond, the entire area will be temporarily closed for the duration of the project. Pet owners are encouraged to take their dogs to the Willow Bend Dog Park as an alternative.
Thank you to all residents for your understanding and patience as the District works to make these essential improvements.
