Wells Branch Wild Conservancy News

Certification Status

We are closing in on our goal of 200 wildlife habitats in Wells Branch — we currently have 196 certifications! Needing the last four is a reminder that our work is important and not finished. Every discussion, email response, and social media post is an opportunity to spread the word about the importance of these actions and values. We have made great progress and will continue to engage our community!

Announcing a New Program!  Become a Member of Wells Branch Wild Conservancy!

Enjoy Members-Only early shopping at both Fall and Spring Native Plant Sales!

Wells Branch’s 84 acres of parkland, including Mills Pond, are vital for local wildlife and migrating birds, with over 1,300 species recorded. However, our public parks can no longer carry the full burden against urbanization and environmental pressures. Memberships help engage our entire community in providing support to protect these essential spaces amidst growing challenges like climate change and water shortages. Memberships make our programming and outreach possible.

Good News for the Neighborhood!

We are thrilled to announce a $500 donation from Mighty Citizen. This gift directly supports our community partnership with Joe Lee Johnson Elementary as they launch a new “Green Team” dedicated to beautifying their schoolyard with native plants.

We are equally excited to support Wells Branch Elementary’s outdoor learning goals through our upcoming Fall Plant Sale. Stay tuned to watch these spaces grow into vibrant, hands-on learning grounds where neighborhood kids can cultivate a real bond with the natural world.

Wells Branch Wild Fall Meeting Schedule

WBWC Wildlife Habitat Field Trip
Monday, October 12 | 10:00am | 14914 Doria Dr.

Are you interested in creating a DIY wildlife habitat out of a Bermudagrass backyard? Curious how much work is involved in having a meadow garden, since mowing is no longer required? WBWC will host a field trip to a DIY garden that is a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat (NWF’s CWH), created using the Austin Water WaterWise Landscape Rebate program to lower overall costs. Our guide, Angel, is a gardener-want-to-be who finds being in her garden an opportunity to relax in awe of nature. She will outline the steps to create an NWF CWH using the WaterWise Landscape program, share the amount of time required, and share lessons learned.

WBWC Native Plant Sale
Saturday, October 17 | 10:00am-1:00pm
(9:00am access for members)
KF Park | 2106 Klattenhoff Drive

Stock up on native plants built for Central Texas heat that support our local pollinators and thrive right in our own soil. New this year: we’re adding veggie and herb seedlings to the lineup so you can grow your fall garden too. Wells Branch Wild Conservancy members get early access (9–10 AM) before the sale opens to the public, so now’s a great time to join the flock.

WBWC Bird City Launch
November 15 | 3:00pm
WB MUD Rec Center | 3000 Shoreline

Wells Branch Wild Conservancy is excited to announce our next major project: beginning October 1, and over the next year, we will be working to certify Wells Branch as a Bird City Texas community. Bird City Texas is a partnership of Audubon Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), created to help people protect birds and their habitats where we live, work, and recreate. The criteria required for certification are designed to be impactful and efficient against habitat loss and other harmful factors. Research shows that bird-friendly habitat increases property values and helps control insects — where birds thrive, people prosper.

WBWC Geowalk
December 5 | 10:00am
The Homestead at KF Park | 2106 Klattenhoff Dr.
